Owl Jewelry – Fossilized Ivory and Silver Owl Pendant
The intriguing owl has a long and varied mythology among the world’s cultures. The owl is believed to have been the Greek goddess Athena’s mascot, valued for its inherent wisdom and serious qualities. Most of us think of wisdom when we see the owl, but this winged beauty is also closely tied to prophecy and protection, and to the mysterious night. This fossilized walrus ivory and sterling silver owl pendant evoke the owl’s natural mystery in fine, handcrafted detail.
The Native American Zuni tribe believes that an owl feather placed by a sleeping baby helps guarantee a safe, restful night. Because the owl is nocturnal, it hunts with phenomenal stealth and vision. The owl’s eyes are tubular in shape rather shaped like an eyeball, turning its vision into something akin to a pair of night vision binoculars. The owl’s feathers are wonderfully soft, slipping softly by when this night bird flies, creating an almost silent flight path.
Our sterling silver owl pendant is hand carved from fossilized ivory. The fossilized ivory used in this pendant is from fossilized walrus tusk which the native Yupik gather on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. This centuries-old walrus tusk has lain in the earth for some 500 to 3,000 years where minerals stained it a range of colors from soft caramel to a deep chocolate brown. Its natural beauty has made it a favorite among artisans and designers worldwide.
