Silver and Fossilized Mammoth Tusk Sea Otter Necklace
This favorite from our carved ivory pendant collection was inspired by a sea kayaking trip Zealandia designers Charles and Jenny took near Seldovia, Alaska. On this adventure, they spotted a sea otter at play and lingered to watch the charming fellow as he swam and caroused in his element.
Sea otters are truly creatures of the water, celebrated here in the fluid sterling silver setting that cradles our fossilized ivory otter. These animals eat, sleep, breed, and give birth in the water. Their fur is specially adapted to keep them dry—even their nostrils and ears have adapted to close when needed. They often dine on their backs, a rock balanced on their chest. They crack open mussels and clams on this makeshift tool, exposing their meal inside.
The otter's watery habitat links it symbolically to feminine water energy and to intuitive qualities. The otter also represents the joy of play, freedom, and self-care.
Our sea otter necklace is carved from fossilized mammoth tusk, an ancient material that is over 15,000 years old. This ivory has lain in permafrost or the earth for millennia. It whispers of a time long, long ago when these wondrous animals still roamed the earth. Fossilized mammoth tusk is prized the world over for its luminous opacity and relative scarcity.
