Hummingbird Jewelry – Fossilized Ivory and Silver Hummingbird Necklace
Our art nouveau inspired fossilized ivory and silver hummingbird pendant features our beloved hummingbird solitaire in an ornate floral setting. Few sights are as magical as catching a hummingbird feeding, its wings buzzing and impossibly light body suspended in midair. This piece celebrates Mother Nature’s perfect cycle in the sweet symbolism of bird and flower.

The Zealandia jewelry line is often influenced by the art nouveau period with its soft curves and naturalistic lines. Art nouveau jewelry borrows from a graceful, illustrative style. This was a relatively brief period in popular culture from about 1892 – 1919 or so, though the art nouveau influence is still seen today in the decorative and graphic arts, and of course in our hummingbird jewelry collection.

Our designers selected fossilized walrus ivory in varying tones for this hummingbird pendant. Fossilized walrus ivory is some 500 to 3,000 years old. It has lain in the earth for centuries, accreting a wide range of colors from nearby minerals. It comes to us in shades of cream, caramel, cocoa, and even almost black. The Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, gather this fossilized walrus ivory for use in their own carvings, and for sale/trade. It is an important economic and cultural resource, as well as a highly sought after material for fine craft and art works.
